Key takeaways
- Drain water lines and fountains before hard freezes.
- Cover and ventilate grills and appliances.
- Shut off gas and disconnect propane tanks.
- Remove cushions and store electronics.
Plumbing first
Water that freezes expands and cracks pipes, faucets and fountains. Close the supply valve, open the faucet and drain the lines. Remove hoses, and use compressed air to clear low spots where water can pool.
Appliances and gas
Clean grills thoroughly, then cover them with breathable, fitted covers. Shut off gas valves and disconnect propane cylinders. Empty and prop open refrigerators to prevent mold.
Fire features
Clean ashes and debris from fire pits and fireplaces, check caps and chimneys and cover gas fire tables. A quick look for cracks lets you repair before the freeze-thaw cycle makes them worse.
Fountains and ponds
Drain and cover fountains that are not rated for freezing, or keep the pump running on small ones if conditions allow. For ponds, keep a hole open with a de-icer or aerator if you keep fish.
Furniture and fabrics
Store cushions and umbrellas, cover frames and lift furniture off wet ground. Clean fabrics before storing to prevent mildew.
