FAQ

Questions, answered.

Cost, timing, permits, materials and what to expect. If your question is not here, call or text and we will answer it.

How much does an outdoor living project cost?

Published U.S. planning ranges commonly run about $12 to $45 or more per square foot for patios, depending on material, and from a few thousand dollars for a grill island to tens of thousands for a full kitchen, cover and fireplace. Our packages page shows typical ranges for three scopes, and a free design visit gives you a written estimate for your actual yard.

How long does a project take?

A typical patio takes about one to two weeks once permits and materials are lined up. Projects with kitchens, fireplaces, roofs and structures take longer, and we give you a clear schedule before we start.

Do I need a permit?

Ground-level patios often do not, but roofs, structures, taller walls, decks, gas and electrical work frequently do, and many HOAs require approval. We tell you what applies to your project and help with drawings and paperwork.

What makes a patio last on Tennessee clay?

The base. We excavate to depth, compact the soil, add fabric where needed and build the stone base in compacted lifts, with the surface sloped to drain. That is what keeps pavers from sinking and walls from leaning.

Pavers, stamped concrete or natural stone: which should I choose?

Pavers are flexible and repairable, stamped concrete is seamless and economical and natural stone has unmatched character. Porcelain is the modern, low-maintenance option. We show samples and costs for each in your own yard light.

Can we build in phases?

Yes. We design the whole yard first, then build in stages, setting up the base, gas lines and conduit for future kitchens, fire features and lighting so nothing has to be torn out later.

Can I see the design before you build?

Yes. You get a scaled plan and material samples, and larger projects include 3D views by day and by night so you can approve the look before the first shovel.

Pergola, covered patio or louvered roof?

A pergola filters sun and costs the least, a covered patio adds a true roof and the most usable days and a louvered roof lets you adjust sun and rain with a remote. Our journal has a full comparison, and we can show you all three in your yard during the design visit.

Do you work around pools and spas?

Yes. We build pool decks, cabanas, outdoor showers and spa pads, with cool, slip-resistant surfaces and drainage planned away from the pool and the house.

Will you handle HOA approvals?

We prepare the plans, renderings and material samples that most HOAs ask for, and we are glad to help you submit them.

Can you build in winter?

Many projects can be built in cooler months when the ground is workable. Concrete and masonry have temperature limits, so we plan the schedule around them and tell you honestly what is best done now and what should wait for spring.
